Ymea conducted some research into the menopause in April 2006, to find out how the menopause affected women's lives, and how they dealt with the symptoms - both emotional and physical. We have included some of the findings below.

The menopause has a huge emotional impact

"To me PMT was never anything a bar of Cadbury’s could not cure, but now it is a different feeling, you just can’t escape the fact that you are old, past it and can’t have kids anymore, a sudden feeling of it being all over"...SC

Emotional feelings include:

  • Tearfulness
  • End of an era
  • Cannot have more children
  • Lack of confidence
  • Poorly
  • Like having flu/bad cold, PMT, pregnancy

"It is not black & white like having a cold and you know how to treat it. You keep asking yourself is this the menopause or is it just me being miserable. Different things work for some and not for others"...SC

    Images of the menopause include:

  • Old/dying
  • Mother/grandmother
  • Hairy chin, wrinkles, weight gain >> depressing
